Human papillomavirus infection more commonly known as HPV is a viral infection that causes warts on the skin and mucous membranes. Certain types of HPV infections have been linked to causing cervical cancer. Not all HPV infections lead to cancer. Different types of the virus cause warts to appear on different parts of the body. Plantar warts are growths found on feet and genital warts found on genital and genitalia regions.
It is very important to make sure you and those you care for are vaccinated against HPV. If you are not vaccinated, please make sure to do so otherwise, you are putting your health at risk. Lesions of genital warts appear on female and male genitals. In females, these warts appear as clusters of lesions lumped together. They normally appear around the vulva but can be found around the anus, cervix and in the vagina.
In males, these warts appear similar to females in a cluster of lesions lumped together. They can appear on the shaft, scrotum and occasionally around the anus. Genital warts are normally painless but can be itchy at times.
Risk factors for contracting HPV infections include a number of unprotected sexual partners, compromised immune systems, skin damage and direct skin contact with open warts. Complications can arise if individuals are not treated properly for HPV infections. Complications include lesions found in upper respiratory and oral regions and cancer. If you are pregnant and positive for HPV, make sure you inform your doctor to closely monitor your symptoms and your cervix for abnormalities. Women who are positive for HPV and pregnant should make sure their O.B is aware.
