Cellulitis is a serious bacteria skin infection that commonly affects the skin on the lower legs however, it can spread to other areas of the body such as face, back and arms. Skin affected by cellulitis appear red, swollen, tender and painful to the touch. If left untreated, serious complications can arise such as MRSA (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus).
The cause of cellulitis is from bacteria that has entered the body through dry, flaky or swollen skin. Bacteria can entered through other passages such as punctured wounds, recent surgery incisions, ulcers or dermatitis. Animal bites can also cause cellulitis.
Risk factors for cellulitis include:
- Injuries involving in open cut
- weakened immune systems,
- diabetes,
- lymphedema (chronic swellings of arms and legs) and obesity can contribute to the likelihood of having cellulitis.
Treatment for cellulitis
Often includes a prescription of an oral antibiotic that is effective against both strands of staphylococcus and streptococcus. After a few days, the infection begins to subside however, it is important to let a physician such as Dr. Farber to know whether or not you are responding to treatment. This condition can be quite serious and have significant side effects if not properly treated.
