Hidradenitis suppurativa is a skin disorder that causes tiny, painful lumps forming under the skin. The painful lumps are formed where skin rubs. These tiny lumps can break open and smell causing bleeding and tunneling underneath the skin. Hidradenitis suppurativa commonly affects hair follicles and sweat glands that secrete lots of oils. Common areas that are infected are armpits, groin, and anal areas. It can also affect parts of the inner thighs, buttocks and underneath breasts. The bumps can grow large in size.
The cause of hidradenitis is unknown but physicians and researchers speculate it may be due to an autoimmune disorder, hormonal imbalances, genetics, excess weight and smoking. It is not contagious and hygiene does not affect whether an individual has the disease or not.
Risk factors include age where individuals between 20-29 are commonly diagnosed, women are more likely to be diagnosed with the disease than men, family history and having certain conditions such as obesity, inflammatory bowel disease, Crohn’s, metabolic syndrome and diabetes.
Hidradenitis suppurativa Symptoms include:
- Blackheads
- Red, tender bumps
- Painful, tiny lumps
- Pus leakage from clumps of lumps forming tunnels over time
