Ingrown toenails are a common disorder where the corners or sides of a toenail begin to grow into soft skin. This disorder can cause pain, swelling, tenderness and sometimes an infection can arise. Ingrown toenails affect the 1st digit of your foot (the big toe) most often.
The cause of ingrown toenails involves:
- Wearing footwear the packs the toes
- Cutting the toenail too short or crooked
- Toenail injury
- Having oddly curved toenails
Ingrown toenail symptoms include:
- Pain and tenderness on either or both sides of the toenail
- Redness and possible swelling around the 1st digit
- Possible infection around the toenail
Complications can arise if it is not treated properly. This can lead to a serious bone infection. Those who are diabetic are more at risk than others. This can lead to poor blood flow and nerve damage of the feet. Minor conditions such as corns or ingrown nails can lead to a foot infection. Sores that can develop into ulcers require surgery to remove and prevent necrosis (a condition where cells of the body begin to die due to the lack of blood flow) of the tissue.
